Designed by Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Williams and built in 1806. The star-shaped walls of the fort were inspired by those built by the French military . It was designated a City landmark in 1967.

Inside the fort is a central courtyard . Grab one of the rocking chairs on the porch . If you doze off a little in one on a sunny afternoon, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
Fort Jay is currently closed to the public. Look up to see the eagle.
Be sure to find the magazine - ammunition storage on the Manhattan side of the fort. Very cool space.

Every hour (on the half hour) go to the Ranger table for tickets to the rooftop tour (which will be an hour later but there is plenty to do) on the weekend. It's worth it for the views of NYC. - Natalie M.
