In 1794 the City Council changed the name of places w/ British names in order to reflect independence. The name of Abingdon Square was preserved, because the Abingdons sympathized with the Americans.
Built in 1921, the statue is a WWI Solider aka “doughboy”, holding an American flag. 10k people came to see the statue on opening day. It commemorates Greenwich village residents that died in WWI.
