1397년(태조 5년)에 쌓은 도성(都城)의 북동쪽에 설치한 문으로 동소문(東小門)이라고도 한다. 도성의 동문과 북문 사이에 세워졌다. 처음에는 문 이름을 홍화문(弘化門)이라 하였다가 1483년(성종 4년) 새로 창건한 창경궁의 동문을 홍화(弘化)라고 정함에 따라 혼동을 피하기 위하여 1511년(중종 6년) 혜화로 고쳤다. 한말까지 보존되어 오다가 1928년 문루가 퇴락하여 이를 헐어버리고 홍예(虹霓)만 남겨 두었는데, 일제가 혜화동과 돈암동 사이의 전차길을 내면서 이마저 헐어버렸다. 1992년에 복원하였다.

Great views, but a tough climb :) Lots of guards are stationed here, and photos are not allowed in some directions. Worth it though for a great view of Seoul. - Bryan Chong
