Big Beach is a beach Mākena located in United States.
Makena Alanui Mākena , HI 96790 United States
Easily one of the best beaches on Maui . Great crescent shaped beach . Very soft sand . Often has a large shore break and the waves can get good enough to surf on the south end near the rocks.
Don't be fooled by subsiding waves as Huge waves and stealthy strong currents can and will sneak up on you. You are taking a bug risk if you turn your back on the ocean and are a weak swimmer.
If you like staying in the shade, walk all the way to the big tree on the left side of the beach . (Also, climb over the rocks on the left and take a short walk! What you'll find might surprise you!)
Big beach has indicated is big. Easy to swim in. Waves are not too big. Water has this beautiful turquoise blue and is very clear. Not crowded . Recommended for a quiet sunbathing session.
What a hidden treasure ! Very few people with beautiful views ! A great beach to relax and enjoy!
3rd entrance is closer to the cove. Nicest part of the beach . Also less crowded as further down from main parking lot and lifeguard.
While the high surf makes it unsafe for proper swimming , it's a great beach to chill and you can still wade at the edge. Loved it here.
Don't be deceived, the waves are quite strong and the big breaks can take you in if you're not prepared. Only go in if you're a strong swimmer. That said, it's a great spot to body/boogie board!
Little Makena is small hidden gem Sunday Party not to be missed To reach Little Makena, on Makena facing the sea go to your right at the very end Then take the small winding path up between the rocks
Love this beach ! It seems a bit like a hidden gem . Soft sands , clear blue water, and big waves—what more can you ask for!
What a fabulous beach but not necessarily the most kid-friendly place for swimming due to the strong currents and big waves . Luckily my kiddos preferred playing in the sand anyway.
The best beach .... For neck breaking ???? beautiful beach if you don't mind the lifeguard public service announcements... Every 10 minutes!
Love it so much more than Wailea or Polo beach . Much less crowded !
Great beach . For great snorkeling head to the lava rocks on the far left as you face the ocean.
If you're standing on the sand looking towards the water stay to the left to snorkel . Huge turtles , eels , and lots to see along the reef. Be safe!
While some of Maui's beaches are pretty overrated, this one is underrated. In fact I consider it Maui's best beach !
There can often be a long cloud that hangs over a portion of Makena. Make sure to bring sunblock when the cloud isn't there. We almost ALWAYS get burned here because we don't want to leave. Read more
Come here when it's windy in Wailea, the little hill serves as a great windbreak.
There is a "Rock Stairwell" on the far right of the beach that leads to Little Beach . Be prepared to see nude bodies!!
There is none better in the world!
Saw some sea turtles up close at the beach without getting in!
High waves and strong currents ; it's fun if you are in the right conditions, but absolutely not for kids.
The beach is gorgeous. But not a swimming beach , waves are bigger on the southern part.
Venture over the rocks to little beach and let yourself be free!
Beautiful big beach! Spend a day here and you won't regret it.
If there’s a shitty beach on Maui to avoid, it is this one. No cell reception. Waves suck. Windy.
BEWARE OF THE WAVES! The deceptively safe-looking shorebreak will sneak up on you. This spot is notorious for breaking tourists ' necks. Read more
Stay away from the trees if you're going barefoot. Lots of thorns!
The sand is super fine and really nice
Beautiful, soft sand beach .
very long and wide beach ! Great for picnic and sports on the sand. Prefer the right side, by the tall rock wall :)
Beautiful soft cool sand
Probably named for the big waves here. Careful, the shore is a bit steep
This is a very big beach.
It's my favorite Beach on Maui
Head right and you’ll find Little Beach
Beware the shore break . It'll break your back.
This is not for kids. Waves are massive and there are better beaches to go to for inexperienced wave riders
Don't smile too long or your mouth will freeze in that position......on second thought-disregard
Don't go in the water unless you are an experienced swimmer. And don't just pretend you are, or it could end badly. Learn how to swim in rough waves first.
Be very careful surfn here....if u ain't local then think twice
It gets fairly crowded .
Best waves for boogie boarding
Big waves ????
Black sand beach
Huge waves, watch out!
This entrance is better.
Boogie or skimmer boards are great here!
Sand and waves
I wouldn't attempt body surfing or boogie boarding due to the fierce shore break .
Great place to enjoy fire-dancing and drums at sunset on Sundays. Great people, if you stay the night a warm blanket is all you'll need to sleep under the brilliant sky... - Erin G
Our photographer took us here for our engagement photos. Amazing beach and tucked away from the tourists. - Shali Nguyen
Great place to see turtles! The sand portion of the beach is small but the bay is big enough once you're in the water - Logan Finney
This is the best beach. Quiet, chill, great water and view. ❤️ - Nick Saretzky
No fresh showers nor full bathrooms (port-a-potty) so plan accordingly. The beach makes it worth it. Big beach is excellent! - John Pappas
Great fun. Some very good art galleries. Especially Lahaina Art gallery. And ck out the ice cream shop, lower level. Delicious. - Blaine Johnson
Pumpkin ravioli was amazing. Good strong drinks. Make sure to come for happy hour. - Kurt Kluever
