The ferry is free before noon on weekends. The lines can get long, so make sure you get there at least 30 min before your desired departure time!
as of 5/24/14, the ferry is $2 round trip. 10:30am, 11:00am ferries are free on weekends only from Manhattan, Slip 7. 11:00am & 11:30am ferries are free from Brooklyn, Pier 6 on weekends.
Ferry is no longer free most times (save the first two trips out from Manhattan on the weekends). Now costs $2 round trip for adults or $20 for the season pass but now runs during the week.
Wonderful way to experience NYC - $2 during the week and free on weekends I believe.
$2 round trip is hard to pass up a mini escape from one of the five boroughs. Great view of the city skyline as well .

Fits much more people than the line ever makes it look. They can almost always fit everyone on. Sit up top for more space and better people watching .

It actually only leaves every 30 mins on weekends from 11AM. Prior to that there is only one departure at 10AM
