The best experience is a very early rise to get to the summit for sunrise - very cool but takes commitment. Option 2 is to go for sunset . Note- it is busier & the drive down is dark. Both are amazing
Sunset & star gazing here Is gorgeous!! Even cloudy days. Go all the way to the top to the summit . The drive isn't for the feint of heart but worth it! The altitude can mess with you, drink lots water
The volcano summit is the best spot to watch the sun rise. Check the cloud report, a few clouds make for a picturesque sun rise but too many and visibility is severely impacted. Also, get there early
Amazing views and if you can get up early enough, worth being here for sunrise . Be careful for altitude sickness as it can hit you without warning if you’re not used to these heights.
Indescribably beautiful. Sunrise above the clouds - I have never seen anything more beautiful. You should always take thick clothes , it is very cold. An absolute must on your Maui bucket list!
It is necessary to put on very warmly: very strong wind and it is cold! Instead of sunrise you can arrive for sunset - in the spring it around 6.30 pm

Absolutely incredible National Park in the clouds . Great birding at Hosmer’s Grove, and a 2 mile round trip hike right after before getting to the larger ones. Be extremely careful with the turns.
Fantastic view , but you have to be there at least 1-2 hours before sunrise to get parking spot on the summit . Also really really cold. Drive to observatory (closed to public) to get more great photos.
Consider one of the sunrise bike tours ! They drive you to the top and then you ride a bike all the way down: no pedaling!
whatever time you're thinking of starting off in the morning, start an hour earlier than that. you'll need it as the lot fills up fast. stay ~30 mins after sunrise , and explore once the area is empty
Watching the sunrise is beautiful and worth the drive up the winding road . Get there early to ensure you get a parking spot . Make sure you wear a jacket and maybe a hat, it's freezing up there!

Once you get there head to the backside of the visitors center and get protection from the harsh freezing wind! You can climb up on the wall of the visitors center for a better view too
The tips on here about wear every bit of clothing you have and bring the hotel blankets are no joke. It was 28 degrees this morning with 25+ mph winds. Well worth it but friggin cold. Get there early.
Starting in February 2017 you need a permit/reservation to visit the peak for sunrise .
Amazing views that you can't get anywhere else, that's all there is to it. Though the drive up is a bit nerve wracking.
Check the exact time of sunrise and it'll take about 2hr from Kaanapali to Summit area(Upper side of Vistor Center). The top of Haleakala is Sooooo cold!!! Make sure to bring ur warm jacket ~
Bring a light hoodie or jacket . It can get a little chilly, although the roads are a little crazy, definitely go up all the way to the top. It's worth it.
Bring warm clothing . No matter what time of year it is – you'll need it if you are going to camp up here to see the sunrise . It's worth it.
Get on The top before sunset , then leave the crowd behind and go to some place on The trail to enjoy a private view with a beer !
Reserve a parking spot for sunrise early, and bring lots of blankets, layers and a thermos of something warm

Worth the drive up! Even if there are clouds you drive through some when you go above the cloud line . Definitely bring a hoodie and/or blankets!
Go early! Park opens at 3am. Be sure to be at the check point by 4am sharp to make it in time for sunrise !!

It's about a 2.5 hour trip from Wailea. Make sure you have a good playlist to keep you awake and alert driving up the crater!
Drive up there early to catch the sunrise . Get there at least an hour before the estimated sunrise time as the park lot fills fast

It's worth the trip! Watching the sunrise from the summit is amazing. The drive up in the morning is a little scary though.
Visit the overlook points after sunrise at the top of the crater.
Dress for both cool and warm weather. We've gone twice and both times The hike into the crater is cold but the hike out is warm.
