중성문은 원효봉(元曉峯)과 의상봉(義相峯)을 직선으로 그은 중간 지점에 해당하는 현재 북한동역사관과 새마을교 일대에서 산성내 중심부에 위치한 중흥동을 향하여 오르는 중간 길목에 위치해 있는 북한산성 중성(重城)의 성문이다. 1998年 문루를 복원하고 성벽도 보수했다.

중성(重城)은 '원래 성 밖이나 안에 따로 쌓은 작은 성'을 뜻하는 말로 북한산성내 중심부에 위치한 이 성문은 북한산성의 중성(重城)에 설치된 성문입니다. 1998년 소실되었던 문루(門樓)를 일부 여장(女牆)과 함께 복원하였는데, 당시 신동영(申東泳, 1944년~1999년) 고양시장이 글씨를 쓴 현판이 문루에 걸려 있습니다. Read more
지금으로부터 100년 전, 이곳 북한산성 중성문(中城門) 모습으로 '헤르만 구스타프 테오도르 산더 (Hermann Gustav Theodor Sander, 1868~1945)'라는 독일 사람이 1907년 3월 북한산성을 여행하고 남긴 사진입니다. 지금과 달리 성문 안팎 주변 산 전체가 나무 한그루 제대로 보기 힘든 몹시 헐벗은 모습을 하고 있습니다.
