Love this hike . No matter which part. We did the Georgetown end and the Great Falls area. Loved it. Super dog friendly !
Take the river trail - just to right of falls overlook off the towpath. About 2 miles round trip. Great easy hike for young ones. Saw several deer and birds.
Make sure you visit the MD side vs the VA side . The view is much much better ????????

Canal historians estimate approximately 35,000 laborers helped dig the canal as well as build aqueducts, culverts, locks, lock houses, etc.
It took 22 years to build the canal from Georgetown , DC to Cumberland, MD. Much of the workforce were immigrants from Ireland and western Europe.
Take a tour on the canal via the mule drawn ferry .

If you look across the river to the Virginia side, check out the left most observation deck. You can make out a brown pole that marks the height of various flood crests thru here. - CJ Wallington
The famous SURRENDER DOROTHY graffito from 1973 has been removed. But the word SURRENDER painted in 2007 in much smaller letters can still be seen on the far-left span on the outer loop of 495. - Naptown ???? Larry
