Designed by architect Peter Eisenman, Berlin's Holocaust Memorial consists of a 19,000m² site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs or "stelae". Building began on April 1, 2003, and was finished on Dec 15, 2004. It was inaugurated on May 10, 2005 and opened to the public two days later.
Cora-Berliner-Str. 1 (Hannah-Arendt-Str.) 10117 Berlin Germany
Exhibit in the underground museum is extensive and extremely well designed. Audio tour recommended. Above-ground monument is beautiful but it would be a mistake not to visit the museum itself.
Just slabs of concrete but the place carries such an emotional and historical weight it's incredibly eerie! Go see at sunset as the shadows stretch and add to the atmosphere.
Okay, it's 3000 large concrete blocks, occupying almost 20,000 m² in the city center. Try to imagine that every single block matches to 2000 (!!!) of murdered jewish man. Now look again on memorial.
Nice and compact museum . Impressive, touching, to the point and a good reminder to all, how people can change and loose the humanity if planned and systematically applied, in good times or bad...
My favorite museum in Berlin. If you want to learn about the holocaust in depth, this is much better than the Jewish or German history museums .
A sobering place, visit the museum underneath as well . Entrance is free and you can spend from 40 minutes to a couple of hours there, depending on how much you want to browse the material available.
The Holocaust Memorial is a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. It’s very worth visiting and the museum as well .
Biggest take-away for me from visiting this place is to do research before visiting. I missed underground museum & understood significance of the haunting memorial only afterwards. Avoid that mistake!
Walk throughout the concrete blocks a feel the grey, feel the weight, get lost, perhaps sit on the cold floor, try not to get distracted by taking pictures or talking, think about the story...
Perfect place for reflections over mankind. Never let it happen again! Go here and show respect , then continue to Brandenburger Tor and the Reichtag. Ponder that this beautiful city has such history.
A must visit. Please be respectful of the memorial and don't climb or act frivolously.
Love the concept and moving through it when there aren't crowds flocking through. I suggest if you're traveling and have got no phone, to come up with a meeting point or else you might lose your group
Just totally awestruck. Genius memorial with so much impact. Can NOT be missed when in Berlin! But please treat it with respect , and reflect!
My favourite place in Berlin. Always visit it and spend some time there. Place has its own soul and is very peaceful .
Definitely visit this monumental memorial spot during the day and night, it's totally different feel. When you begin walking through these stones, the feeling of sublime
Also, please be respectful of this place. This is a memorial, not a park . The slabs are not benches for tourists to sit on, nor this is a labyrinth to run and play around.
Breathtaking. This is something that absolutely must be seen. You cannot just look though, walk through it an experience it. I cannot even begin to explain the experience you will feel.
Goosebumps guaranteed. Not because it is delicately carved or a bouquet of colours but because of the amount of murdered people it stands for. Please don‘t take happy photos here. Show some respect .
One of the best memorial spaces in the world. Take your time walking around and get lost in the maze of avenues.
Walk through the seemingly endless rows of concrete slabs to experience the feelings of confusion, loneliness & disorientation that will allow you to truly appreciate the genius of this memorial.
Very sobering place. Quite a few people do seem to think it's a make-out spot or a place to play hide and seek - but ignore them & try to walk quietly among the stones. Go to the visitors centre.
The design may seem simple at first, but it's a complex metaphor that can be interpreted any way. Make sure to head down below the memorial. It's a very sad, eye-opening, firsthand experience.
Please don't jump around the stones or play hide and seek. It isn't a playground .
Absolutely unique. A great place to remember the history we all share. And please, don't make fun and stupid selfies there.
Very interesting memorial. Different from what you usually see. Be aware that there's a museum downstairs. It is free and totally worth it.
It's an impressive monument if you take your time to walk through it. Sometimes there are some idiots around who think that playing hide and seek in such a place was a good idea.
Artist says it is up to self-interpretation. Please do not stand on tops of blocks or run in between.
Just don't be an asshole and DON'T stand on the stones. Despite the playfull character, it's still a memorial, so show some respect .
To visit this place once in our life time to learn the value of life and awareness how fortunate your present will never be ended up like those million eras.
A beautiful monument conveying the confusion horror and mass of murder that went down in a way you can feel. Mostly wheelchair accessible just cobblestones .
A must-visit, the Peter Eisenman designed memorial creeps up on you. Not so spectacular at first glance, but when you go deep into the "valleys", it has an effect.
Wander the Field of Stelae with its 2,711 monolithic gray concrete slabs arranged in a grid-like landscape. A subterranean museum houses exhibitions on the persecution and execution of European Jews.
This memorial is a must see! You would feel the pain people went through during the years of war ????
Very impressive monument . Walk through the "maze" and be amazed hoe quit it is in there. Feels very lonesome.
Juden Europas a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold.
THIS IS NOT A ROMANTIC DATE SPOT . so please refrain from making out on the stones. It's very disrespectful and you'll have to go through life knowing you're a douchebag .
A good stop if you are exploring the area for a stroll and consider the past.
Centrally located, close to other touristic attractions . Free, open access. Kind of dull, but super meaningful. Just watch where you walk and step on.
Very beautiful place in the middle of Berlin. Gives you lots of thinking.
May this be a reminder for us to stand up against genocide and injustice anywhere.
You can only feel what this monument mean when you discover it. Bring some time and walk between the cubes and feel the spirit!
Love this beautiful memorial in Berlin , it really shows how Germany deals with the after war effects
Wonderful architecture and a very thoughtful place to spend some time.
a must visit in berlin - beautiful outdoor memorial and insightful museum (free entry)
Visit the exposition downstairs and you will understand what the concrete squares symbolize.
Definitely visit the museum under the memorial. And do take the audioset!
Impressive in its size, but upsetting to see people fooling around and playing games at a memorial
A huge abstract artwork for the Jewish Holocaust victims. This is considered to be one of the most important memorials in the city . Located south of the Brandenburg Gate in Friedrichstadt.
People play hide and seek around the monument , unbelievable. It takes some time to get in due to security check in the entrance.
If you're playing hide and seek here you definitely missed the point of this place.
Museum under the Holocaust memorial. Worth a visit. Learning about the fates of particular Jewish families and individuals will give you goose bumps. - Maria Köhler
