As you wander the six rooms and basement , you'll conjure images of the erratic and gifted Poe, who lived here. Tours are self-guided or led by a park ranger from Wednesday-Sunday. Admission is free.
Start the tour with the short movie so you get a better sense of what the house is about. :) Also! Definitely watch your step (as it says on the self-guided tour ), the steps are steep!
Pretty short tour but well worth it if you're a fan of literature. The hours are a little goofy but if you get there around the right time, it's a good thing to do to kill an hour or so.
The writer of The Raven and The Telltale Heart lived in Philadelphia for six years at this now-historic site. The house will be closed for renovation from March-June 2013.

The stop was cool to see, but not a must-see if you have other priority stops. We walked from Broad street/Spring Garden SEPTA down to see it and then took a bus back up and out to the pennitentery.
The website says it is open Wednesday through Sunday, but it's actually only open Friday through Sunday. :(
Turn off the lights in the room with the windows painted red. Turn on the stereo, close the door, listen to Poe and bask in the eerie red glow. Super creepy fun time.
