Really great value at $75 for the omakase . Never had a cherry blossom leaf which was unique. But definitely order one or two a la carte pieces afterwards, especially the botan shrimp topped with uni
Sake is the natural choice for a sushi pairing, and Tanoshi lets diners bring their own, but if there happens to be a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine around the house, bring it. Read more

Really great omakase (chef 's choice) experience. They opened a second place right next door - Tanoshi Bento - with the same menu and we reserved just an hour before. The young Korean girl is great
Best value Omakase in NYC - likely in the US. Fresh and creative. The unique rice treatment is signature! Don’t miss out on the XXX or fatty tuna as an extra.
Prices range from $95-$99 depending on what’s on offer, but the omakase menu consistently includes akadashi miso soup , crispy fluke, ten pieces of chef-selected sushi , one half roll and one hand roll .
Tokyo-esque Omakase is a treat to have in NY. Excellent quality and variety. Prices have risen and reservation policy is harsh - I was personally burned years ago - but it's a great sushi meal.
My first omakase experience and I'm so hooked. Everything was fresh and service was amazing. My favorites were uni with quail egg , pike and crab brains. Make your reservations , you won't regret it!!
Popularly deemed the “holy grail of NY sushi ” this spot is known for its authentic sushi and omakase tasting meals. We ordered the omakase meal and especially loved the branzino and scallop nigiri .
Incredible meal. The best sushi I've had in NY hands down. The restaurant only seats 10 people and has 3 settings a night so it's really a great experience and the price is great
Quaint, casual vibe omakase . They seat in waves so make sure to make a reso and pick up some sake for BYOB . Their white fish is superb and of course, get the XXX. 1 of my fav NYC sushi joints .
Intimate dining experience - only 10 seats; reserve early! Amazing omakase sushi for a great price ~$70. Each piece was melt-in-your-mouth delicious! Get the spicy scallop sashimi a-la-carte. & BYOB
Pretty amazing little omakase place on the UES. Arrive on time and bring your own sake from the liquor store one block south.
Follow Tanoshi-san's advice while eating your omakase ! You will not be disappointed. Try the uni with botan afterward.
Tanoshi bends traditional sushi to please contemporary tastes, but keeps its integrity with top-quality catch. Feeling lucky? Nab one of ten seats and indulge in an unforgettable omakase tasting menu .
Great addition to the neighborhood . Delicious bento box with unique sides. Can't go wrong with the chicken teriyaki or the shrimp tempora. And definitely try the salad dressing-- incredible!
Incredible sushi ! The experience is authentic & will make you feel like you're dining in Tokyo! restaurant only seats ten however (bummer) & only does three seatings a night! Make your reservation !
Don't forget to BYOB . I love anything with quail eggs . You must come here if you want to celebrate a special occasion . Nice ambiance and even better food/service.
The omakase here is amazing. The black sable was so orgasmically melt-in-your-mouth incredible, I asked for another at the end.
If you want sushi , this the best deal in town . It still runs you $100 for the omakase (only option) but it's one of the best sushi restaurants in town .
Fantastic fish and great learning experience for those interested in the origins of their meal. Miso cured black sable was grand.
Fresh. Simple. Delicious. Highly recommend! But be careful, narrow walkway and don't expect sushi entertainment!
Only 3 seatings a night- 6,7:30,9pm. And need to put your name down starting at 2pm on the clipboard. Omakase is amazing. Also get some of the seasonal pieces like uni on botan and the crab brains.
Hidden gem of the UES. Super small but so incredible. Get the XXX roll!
Tanoshi is one of the best omakase sushi experiences you can find in New York City , and it comes at a better price than all of its contemporaries .
We spent time with every bite and tried to fully appreciate the craft of our chefs . They noticed. Don't miss the art by just chowing down like you would at any old sushi joint .
Apparently chef toshio loves Michael Jackson! He was camera shy but on occasion sang and moved to the beat, spectacularly preparing our omakase ????
BYOB , and best omakase for the price in the city . Small and unstated interior but thats the charm of this place. Highly recommend.
Terrific omakase and probably one of the most wallet-friendly ones around. Triple X should not be skipped!
Best sushi find!! $80 omakase small Japanese traditional find! BYO to top it all off!!
It's one of the 2-3 best omakase sets that i had, including places in Tokyo. Really, really good!
Omakase . You don't have a choice, literally, until after and can pick from this menu on the wall of seasonal fish .
10 piece omakase + BYOB . Triple X (uni, ikura , quail egg ) - everything good in a bite
Definitely come for the omakase . Very authentic experience similar to Tokyo.
Believe the hype! Serious contender for best sushi in the city and a bargain compared to other places of similar quality
Loved this place. Get the special omakase . It's worth it.
Reasonably priced omakase : $100 for app, 10 nigiri , 1/2 maki roll , hand roll , miso soup . BYOSake ????
Unbelievably good quality sushi at a reasonable price for omakase . Don’t order the additional menu items or else you’ll be paying handsomely for them
Seatings are at 6, 7:30, and 9. Get here a few hours earlier to sign up for a spot (only 10 people per seating). The omakase is sooo worth it!
A step below nakazawa, but fantastic omakase at a more reasonable price. Get the monkfish liver and scallop apps.
Amazing omakase in a small casual space. Leave room for the unique specials. BYOB . Another favorite!
Go go go. You will not find a a better sushi experience than at this 10-seat, omakase-only hole in the wall in New York.
Hole in the wall , very casual and superb sushi makes for a great restaurant experience. Omakase only. BYOB
Amazing quality of fish in and intimate setting . Reminds me of the sushi bars in Tokyo. The chef was a little heavy on the wasabi though.
Awesome omakase , Black Throat and Golden Eye are my favorites
Great and affordable omakase ! Great for dates ;)
Incredible value. Creamy scallop app and Triple X a la carte FTW.
Fatty tuna a la carte slab is generously huge. Get it.
Omakase ! No frills, just great sushi . BYOB and splurge a la carte afterwards.
