보국문은 1711년 축성된 북한산성의 여러 성문 가운데 하나로 축성 당시에는 동암문(東暗門)으로 불리웠다. 대동문(大東門)과 대성문(大城門) 사이 해발 567미터 지점에 위치하고 있으며, 성문 안쪽 지근거리에 보국사(輔國寺)가 있었기 때문에 현재의 이름을 얻었다.
