Wonderful collection, tons of Italian Renaissance paintings . Don't miss Leonardo da Vinci and try to get the small tables near the window at the café at the gardens level, the park view is relaxing.
Good selection of non Scottish and great Scottish works. Intimate and lively way to spend a couple of hours. Staff a little past sell by date.
Nice museum with beautiful paintings , especially from Italian Renaissance. Well built also the Scottish's Art collection : don't miss it!
i wish there were more Scottish art rather than Italian and Dutch, but still worth checking out. The painting of building of Royal Instution in New Town , and portrait of Walter Scott were lovely!
Please check out the portrait by John singer Sargent upstairs. I feel it is a masterpiece as your can project any emotion onto the subject and still not be convinced that you understand the painting .
One of the most charming museums anywhere boasting an impressive collection of paintings by Van Dyck , El Greco , Cezanne, Monet, Sargent, and Constable. Read more
The curator is to be commended. Every work has a story. I learned so much at this museum ! #edinburgh101
Can take photos except of certain paintings . These are indicated by a symbol on their information plaque - a camera with a cross through it. Usually paintings that are on loan from other galleries .
It's a beautiful gallery with plenty of amazing portraits and sculptures . besides as all the scottish national museums is free entrance.
Great collection of masterpieces of Scottish and non-Scottish artists
Good collection, a lot of Dutch and Flemish paintings . Big names like Monet and Van Gogh. It's free so take a look inside if you're around.
Excellent free art gallery in heart of Edinburgh
Free admission , fairly good collection of works. Liked the beautiful landscape painting by John Knox the most!
Nice paintings from El Greco , Da Vinci and others. Worth visiting
Small museum between two big parks ! Lovely collection with some truly beautiful art works!

Very nice free gallery with lots of interesting pieces
Really spectacular collection and to top it off, it's free.

There's a great treasure hunt around The National Gallery , just download the FREE app, Global Treasure Apps, www.globaltreasureapps.com
Beautiful collection of European art
Look closely at 'Art Cabinet with Anthony van Dyck 's 'mystic marriage of St Catherine'. Please let me know if you can explain what's going on.
Definitely pay attention not to walk into people, no matter how pretty they are. There's plenty of space but walking around the exhibits can get a but crowded .
Note that you can't take pictures here, even with your smartphone. If you do try, a guard will force you to delete them, otherwise you'll be thrown out. Nice chaps.
Watch out when carrying your bag either in front or behind cause they'll tell you off, certainly won't leave a donation because of their attitude, watch out for the old guy in tartan trousers!
See works by Christen Købke: Great Dane. He may not have been a rebellious artist , but the Danish master did have an astonishing eye for colour and detail. Visitdenmark
It's not very large, but has some nice pieces. You can do most of it in about an hour or so. Totally worth adding to your itinerary.
Nice paintings and free admission .
Beautiful museum . Free visiting
A backpack needs to be carried by hand in the gallery or it can be left in the lockers for 1 pound.
I was curious about the skater painting and still not sure why it is no longer part of the museum logo.
One of the finest Art Museum and Galleries I have ever visited.
Head straight for the Dutch gallery in the back left corner on the first floor.
Leave your backpack in a locker or the staff will follow you around asking you to carry it by hand. Stupid unnecessary policy as it's really spacious .
Impressive gallery , must visit
Impressionist gallery is a must see!
I wish the Scottish section was bigger than two small rooms.
Great collections. Don't miss the French part ;)
Great place to go and see some really great works of art .
A must if visiting to see ‘Monarch of the Glen’!
Great paintings to see, you could spend the whole day in awe.
If you’re wearing a backpack they’ll ask you to carry it by hand or check it in with them
May 2013 - good news - you can now take photographs - no flash, tripods - in most galleries
