대동문은 북한산성의 여러 성문 가운데 하나로 동서남북 네 개 방위 가운데 동쪽을 대표하고 있는 성문이다. 우이동 진달래능선이 끝나는 해발 540미터 지점에 위치하고 있다. 지금의 성문 1993년에 문루를 갖추는 등 복원되었다. 성문 안쪽 성돌에 축조 당시인 1711년 공사를 책임진 기관과 구간을 기록한 명문이 있다.

Standing in the eastern section of Bukhansanseong (Fortress), Daedongmun (literally "Great East Gate") was built in 1711 to coincide with the completion of the fortress.

大東門은 北漢山城 城門 中 東西南北, 4個 方位 가운데 東쪽을 代表하고 있는 城門으로 牛耳洞 진달래稜線이 끝나는 海拔 540m 地點에 位置하고 있습니다. 지금의 門은 1993年에 門樓를 갖추는 등 復元되었습니다. 城門 안쪽 城돌에 築造 當時인 1711年 工事를 責任진 機關과 區間을 記錄한 銘文이 있습니다.
산성 안에서 서울 동북쪽 수유동과 우이동으로 나가는 동쪽 관문인 대동문은 1711년 (숙종 37년)에 지어졌습니다. 1993년 소실되었던 문루(門樓)를 여장(女牆)과 함께 복원하였는데, 이 때 북한산성을 완성한 조선 제19대 왕 숙종(肅宗, 1661년~1720년)의 글씨를 모아 새긴 현판을 문루에 걸었습니다.
